Taking a surfing lesson in Laguna Beach California depending on the season can be quite tricky. In winter or fall time there are no crowds and not a lot of surfing lessons out in the ocean, the water temprature can get a little chilly. Life guards take down a black- ball flag which seperates swimmers from surfers in the summer months and allows surf instructors to teach anywhere depending on the rocks (reef) or the tides. Most of the surf breaks in Laguna Beach are intermediate to advanced which limits a good spot to learn how to surf. Hawkama is known for it's user friendly wave in between Anita and Thalia Street. When I started teaching many years ago, there were only 3 people teaching in Laguna Beach. I was one of them, now there are more than 15 different companies along with their instructors. Imagine all of these lessons in the water at the same time in the summer months trying to learn to surf, not to mention the seasonal surf camps. Students are running in to each other due to space and waves. Skim boarders from the shore launching into the same wave your beginner students are surfing. Catching your own wave is an awesome feeling. Catching a wave with another person is pretty cool too. Catching a wave with about 5-10 people on the same wave as they call it PARTY WAVE and then having another beginner ditch his or her board right in front of you so you crash into each other is probably not the feeling you were searching for. Surfing has gotten so popular and crowded in the summer because schools out, the suns out and water tempratures are inviting. Plus, a surf camp is cheeper than a baby sitter. I always recomend if you have kids, put them in Jr. Lifeguards before a surf camp. They will learn more about the ocean and the tides along with wave etiquette. If your an adult wanting to learn how to surf, make sure your surf instuctor can not only surf but is strong enough to push you into waves. If you have to catch your own waves on your first surfing lesson? Your surf instuctor is either too young, too hung over, or too lazy. Clearly they lied about being a surf instructor or that company just filled that spot. LOL. When searching for the best experience, please choose wisely and do your research when taking a surfing lesson. READ SOME REVIEWS ABOUT THAT COMPANY.
